Sampler Quilt BOM - Block 5 - Pinwheel

Sampler Quilt BOM - Block 5 - Pinwheel

The Pinwheel block is made of 4 Half Square Triangles, using all the same techniques as our other HST blocks so far, but just in a different layout to make a visually striking block.

The block looks like the classic childhood toy of a paper windmill, reminiscent of beach holidays.

You can use our 5" Square Ruler or any of our longer rulers following the marking on your cutting mat.

We have used our Wooden Point Turner to mark the diagonal line, but you can use any marking tool: chalk, friction pen, water erasable

Our Mini Iron and new Wool Pressing Mats are handy here.

Use the 45 degree line on your cutting mat, such as our Rotating Cutting Mat or use a Square Ruler such as our 9 1/2" to trim the block.  Line the 45 degree line up on one of the diagonal lines on the block, move the ruler down diagonally to 4 1/2" and trim.  Repeat this on all sides for all 4 HSTs.

Having pressed the seam allowances to the dark side, it will create opposing ridges that will lock together.  Secure with pins and mark the diagonal line.

Keeping the layout in order, then piecing row by row, helps you keep the placement of the HSTs so you don't end up with one upside down in your design.

And there you have it, your pinwheel block!

As ever you will find all the tools you need on our website and continued support on our Facebook Community, where you can ask questions and share your progress.
