Sampler Quilt BOM - Block 1 - Four Patch

Sampler Quilt BOM - Block 1 - Four Patch

Block 1 of our Sampler Quilt is here! We’re starting with the classic Four Patch, a great introductory block that sets the foundation for the rest of the quilt.

This is the placement in our sampler quilt for the Baby sized quilt which also can be used as a wall hanging.  If you are making the Double size quilt you simply make 4 of these, as with all the blocks.

The squares needed for this block are 4½″, so you’ll need to cut 4½″ strips along the width of fabric (WOF) to get started.  Keep any left over fabric safe for future blocks.  Shop our rotary cutters, mats and rulers here to make the job easy.

Full cutting and piecing instructions are included in the downloadable pattern here.

If you’re still choosing fabrics, be sure to refer back to our fabric requirements blog post for guidance and download the colouring page to test your combinations before you begin.

Clips are a great alternative to pins to hold your piecing together without the ouch.

Pressing seams to the darker side, stops the darker fabric showing through the lighter background fabric.

Nesting seams means to have one set of seam allowances pointing left and the other right.  This way the seams align perfectly, without bulk.  Putting a clip on this join holds everything together.  When sewing, just ensure you tuck the seam allowance under the presser foot so you don't accidentally shift the join.

Now press the longer seam allowance to one side.  Then ensure your block is 8 1/2' square.  You can use the markings on your cutting mat to check this or use a quilting ruler instead.  Each side should be 4 1/4".

Ruler guide for this project:

-A good all round ruler for all quilting is either 6" x 24" or 6 1/2" x 24.

-A handy addition is a 6" x 12" as it's smaller to handle for smaller cuts.

-A bonus addition is a 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" Square, it allows you to square two sides quickly.

Shop our rulers here.
